G. Mahler Symphony No. 9 arranged for chamber orchestra by Iain Farrington
Mahler and his music is something we may more commonly associate with the grandest halls and orchestras. One of our greatest goals with Mutatis’ project “Metamorphosis” is to explore how music can build upon earlier ideas, be arranged, and adapted to new contexts and possibilities.
Mahler’s Ninth Symphony became the great composer’s last completed work – he never got to hear it himself. A large BBC Music Magazine readers’ poll ranked it fourth among all symphonies, providing an indication of its popularity, qualities, and the impression it leaves.
Normally, the Ninth cannot be performed in this venue due to its massive instrumentation, but in Iain Farrington’s clever arrangement, an ensemble of fewer than 20 musicians can tackle this monumental work, which conductor Leonard Bernstein claimed was Mahler’s “farewell to life”.
The concert is made possible by the kind support of Det Obelske Familiefond, William Demant Fonden, Knud Højgaards Fond, Beckett Fonden and Augustinus Fonden.
