Program:
Martinů: Nonet nr. 2, H.374
Dvořák: Serenade, d-mol, opus 44, arrangeret for nonet
Beethoven: Septet i Es-dur, opus 20
This program brings together three cornerstones of the Central European chamber music repertoire, each in its own way exploring the possibilities of a small ensemble.
While Martinu’s Nonet No. 2 was originally conceived for this very instrumentation—a nonet of winds and strings—Dvořák’s Serenade in D minor was not. It was originally written for a larger wind ensemble with cello and bass, but in this concert, we present a rare arrangement for nonet. Why adapt Dvořák’s rich, almost orchestral textures to the intimate scale of a nonet? Reworking pieces for different ensembles was a widespread practice during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It allowed music to reach different settings and new audiences—particularly important in an age before recordings.
By offering this Serenade in a reduced version, we aim to preserve its lyrical character and folkloric charm while highlighting the individual colors and transparency a nonet affords. This format allows for a more immediate connection between performers and audience, emphasizing the conversational qualities that lie at the heart of chamber music.
Beethoven’s Septet, a work he somewhat resented in later life for its immense popularity, rounds off the program. Composed in 1799, it stands as a bridge between classical divertimenti and the emerging Romantic sensibility. It too embodies the spirit of chamber music as a communal and flexible genre, often reworked by Beethoven himself into different settings—an approach mirrored in the program as a whole.
